I like night scenes for the interesting lighting (multiple light sources, varying colors, light radiating from a source within the picture frame). I also like night moods, whether romantic, desolate, frightening or just static. If you ever want the feeling of time standing still, watch out a window for an hour or so at about 3 a.m. (OK, New Yorkers, this doesn't mean you). No sun marching across the sky, no people. Maybe some sprinklers coming on in the distance. You may feel lonely, or you may feel you own a little more of the world since you seem to be the only one around.
I like old buildings because they have scars and show the marks of all the changes people have made to them over the years, often without regard to esthetics. I also like the way they stand and watch as the world passes them by. Eyes may be the windows of the soul, but windows are the eyes of buildings.
A street may suggest movement or destination, but an empty street at 4a.m. suggests that there is nowhere to go nor reason to go there, so just be here, now. Be quiet and know that God is.
Some of my pictures are just a pretty scene or an appreciation of a well-restored house. But most have an undercurrent of something not quite known or something lost. Not "meaning" or symbolism, but an invitation to look beneath the surface.
