Born and raised in a small village in the Embu district of Kenya, Wawi Amasha is an up and coming designer/artist with a rapidly growing following. She is the creator of Mami Afrika Designs, which is her beautiful translation of meshing the ever-inspiring African culture she grew up in with a funky Western flare.
When it comes to her art, her body of work portrays a unique blend of Abstract Expressionism and traditional African art, culminating in something truly fresh and new. Vivid colors gush out at you, surreal snapshots of African life burst forth from the canvas; faces and figures stare into the distance, contemplating the nature of life. This is the defining term for her work. “Life.
With this in mind it is no wonder that Amasha depicts various facets of African life, using bold bright and vibrant colors that naturally radiate a positive energy. Amasha draws inspiration from her African background portraying African women mostly going about their daily chores. She calls her work ‘art to inspire’ and considers her work as filling a void for Africans in search of positivism.
If you look carefully, you will find that she places a giraffe in most of her paintings. She does this in honor of her grandfather whose name "Ndwiga" in her language means giraffe.
Ms. Amasha lives and works in Santa Monica, CA, where she exhibits new works regularly. She has been featured in Mimi Magazine, African Colours, and Soul Magazine Her latest exhibition is at her Art Studio in Santa Monica.
