I recently got into watercolor and I heard it is the most difficult paint medium to manipulate. That's definitely true. I have the hardest time when I'm trying to do detail, especially for example an edge along a straight line or something similar.
I've tried using less water but sometimes that's just as difficult as using too much water - they both get out of control.
Anyone have any ideas to share for manipulating watercolor in detail spaces?
Every medium is different and each has pros and cons. Watercolor is definitely a medium to try if you want a solid grounding in all painting techniques and mediums.
Watercolor needs lot of time to be able to control but after a while it's so fun!. I'll say use the very small head brushes but it need to be a really good one (brush quality is a huge different for watercolor!), soft and pointy. I personally use Ruben number 2. Or if it jsut along the edge you might want to try ti flat head brushes! they are amazing to make the sharp edge. Also you can paint once let it dry and then paint over it again, this way it will contain the shape somewhat better for the detail space.
I agree this is the most difficult paint medium! I think you got it right by saying you have to find the middle ground - too much water will get away from you and with not enough you will lose control of the spreadability of the color.
And practice, that's what I always do when something frustrates me and eventually it gets better.
