The Sustainability Commission of the City of Palm Springs is sponsoring a national photographic competition entitled, “Earth Through a Lens” as part of their charge to increase public awareness of sustainability issues. Both amateur and professional photographers are invited to upload images related to specific themes described below by January 15, 2010 at the website maintained by the Western StatesArt Foundation, www.callforentry.org. Thirty finalists will be selected to exhibit their photographs along Palm Canyon Drive for the month of April, 2010. An awards ceremony will be held to celebrate the 40th annual Earth Day on April 22, 2010.

The goals of this project are to educate the public about stewardship of the earth and to encourage photographers to monitor our successes and failures in environmental conservation. Because the resulting exhibit will be held on Palm Canyon Drive with the active support of the Downtown Merchants, it is anticipated that this event will also serve as an added attraction for visitors to the region.

Images are being solicited in the following categories:
• The natural environment: desert, water, mountains
• Human impact on the environment: consumption, destruction, restoration

A distinguished panel of judges representing environmental photographers, photojournalists, and a museum curator will select the finalists. Prizes will include cash awards, inclusion in an exhibit catalog, and publication of winning photos in Palm Springs Life magazine.
