I've had some commercial interest in my work but don't know the first thing about licensing. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

Get a good lawyer. It might sound like an expensive proposition but they work either on retainer or commission and both of which will cost less than the incremental revenue they will get for you by working on your behalf.

Also, a lot of lawyers will have a free initial consultation so you can see what they have to offer before having to pay.

If you're talking about high dollar commercial work it will definitely be worth your while.

I'm actually looking at starting on a low level with small commissions. Not sure if a lawyer is worth the cost when the money is on the lower level.

That's all the more reason to get a lawyer. They can actually build your relationships into high dollar work. I've had many friends get burned by not consulting a lawyer and in some cases missing out on tens of thousands of dollars. It's worth it.
